The Lyrical Abstractions of Ieko Catnap

Ieko Catnap is an artist from France. I had first seen her abstracts at the former Kriss Museum in Second Life. I was drawn to her expressive brushstrokes and use of colors to create an ethereal quality. Though well trained in classical realism, as Ieko had shown me an earlier work that reminded me of the Renaissance, her mastery is striking in the abstracts.

Catnap's abstracts follows the style of the lyrical abstractions. It is part of the French modern art movement that reflects the style of American Abstract Expressionism - expressive, spontaneous, reacting from within . . .

The Interview

What kind of artist are you? and what medium do you work in?

I'm an lyrical abstract oil painter. I work traditional painting fat over lean on canvas or wood and sometimes include interesting materials such as silk, paper, light wood, fibers, human and dog hairs.

--What is your process? Do you work from photos? Do you work from life? How do you approach your art?

My process is from my imagination. Everything around me - music, books, news ...inspires my art. I try to share my reactions with the viewer.

Did you have any formal training in art? If so, what university? If not did you take workshops or learned from books?

I trained under two independent graphic designers from 1973 until 1975. Then I went to work in a print factory as a graphic designer. While working there, I seriously began to paint in 1993 after attending a contemporary art school, CEPAGRAP (Saint-DiƩ-des-Vosges - France).

What is your earliest experience with art that you remembered that mark your path into becoming an artist?

My first solo exhibit in 1998 (CEPAGRAP gallery)

Who influenced you to be an artist? A family member, a teacher....

I dreamed to be a painter since I was young. I was able to realize my dream later when I had time in my life; I never abandoned my ideas many years. My teacher was crucial helping me to find my artist way.

What is your reason to exhibit in Second Life? and what is your experience had been? Any positive or negative. And has exhibiting in SL affected your RL art?

I exhibit in second life because it is a great opportunity to show my artwork and meet people around the world. My experience with SL is positive. I sold one of my paintings in real life from meeting someone in SL. As it turns out it was a dentist living near my RL town.  He teaches on second life. It is the best experience I could dream come true!
